When does a company actually need a custom TMS instead of a standard solution?

Lately I’ve been looking into transportation management systems because our logistics operations are getting more complicated. We started with a basic off-the-shelf tool, but now it feels like we’re constantly working around its limitations instead of it helping us.

I came across this page explaining how custom systems work: https://twincore.net/logistics/tms-development-services/

From what I understood, custom TMS solutions are built around your actual workflows — like routing, pricing, dispatching, and integrations — instead of forcing you into predefined logic. It also mentioned that this can reduce manual work and improve visibility across operations.

Now I’m wondering: at what point does it really make sense to switch to something custom?

I think the turning point is when your processes stop fitting into your current system. We had the same issue — too many exceptions, different pricing rules, and multiple carriers. Our team ended up using spreadsheets alongside the TMS just to make things work.

Once you reach that stage, a custom solution starts making more sense because it can actually reflect how your business operates instead of forcing you to adapt.
